Preservation

Dedicated to ensuring the history and contributions of those residing in the Roslyn Historic cemeteries are remembered, respected and revered.

Preservation in the Roslyn, Washington Cemeteries

The Roslyn Historic Cemeteries-27 separate burial grounds representing more than two dozen ethnic and fraternal groups-are preserved as one of the most culturally significant cemetery complexes in the Pacific Northwest. Preservation efforts by the Roslyn Cemetery Legacy Association focus on protecting historic burial landscapes, safeguarding cultural identity, digitizing family records, and maintaining the physical integrity of monuments and grounds.

Protecting Historic Landscapes

Roslyn Legacy Cemetery Association works to prioritize and maintain the cemeteries’ original 19th- and early-20th-century layout. This includes:

  • Retaining historic pathways, fencing, and plot boundaries
  • Stabilizing slopes and preventing erosion to protect burial sites
  • Managing vegetation to preserve the natural forested setting

These actions ensure the cemeteries remain visually and structurally consistent with their historic appearance.

Conserving Monuments and Cultural Markers

Each cemetery reflects the traditions of the immigrant communities who built Roslyn-Italian, Croatian, Serbian, Polish, African American, and many others. Preservation efforts focus on:

  • Repairing damaged headstones, curbing, and grave markers
  • Restoring culturally specific symbols, inscriptions, and materials
  • Documenting fragile or deteriorating markers before they are lost

This work protects the unique cultural identity embedded in each cemetery.

Maintaining Historic Integrity Through Restoration

Rather than replacing old materials, preservation in Roslyn emphasizes repair and restoration, which keeps the cemeteries historically authentic. Examples include:

  • Rebuilding historic retaining walls
  • Reinforcing original fencing
  • Restoring pathways using historically appropriate materials

This approach preserves the cemeteries’ character while minimizing environmental impact.

Community-Led Preservation

Volunteers play a central role in sustaining the cemeteries. Guided tours, special event participation, education and stewardship programs ensure ongoing care. This community involvement:

  • Reduces deterioration
  • Supports long-term preservation planning
  • Keeps cultural memory alive across generations

The cemeteries remain preserved not only through physical work but also through the Roslyn digital database which hosts digital information of the interred in the Roslyn cemeteries.

Roslyn Digital database

Preservation of family stories, photographs and profiles are hosted on the database. This knowledge is accessible via the internet through the physical kiosk (at the cemetery), mobile phone or a computer. The Roslyn maps are categorized by cemetery and tie to the interred profile creating a robust interactive customer experience.

Summary

Preservation by the Roslyn Cemetery Legacy Association centers on protecting historic landscapes, conserving culturally significant monuments, and maintaining the integrity of one of the most diverse cemetery complexes in the United States. Through restoration, careful land management, and digitizing family stories, artifacts and photographs, our stewardship ensures these cemeteries remain a lasting record of the town’s multicultural mining heritage.
